What Independent Pubs Can Learn From Early Adopters

Some independent pubs have been stocking dog treats behind the bar for long enough now to know what genuinely works, and what looked good in theory but never quite landed with customers.

What consistently works

Pubs that treat every dog visitor the same way, every time, build far stronger loyalty than those who only offer a treat occasionally or when a regular happens to ask. Consistency matters more than novelty here. Early adopters using our dog-friendly pub programme also report that pairing a treat with a proper water bowl, rather than either alone, made the biggest visible difference to how welcome owners felt.

What did not work as well

Rotating treats too frequently confused both staff and regulars, who came to expect a specific treat for their dog. Sticking with a small, dependable range such as Pawhawk Steak and Bark Ribs rather than constantly changing things up proved far more effective in practice.

  • Consistency beats novelty, pick a small range and stick with it
  • Pair treats with a proper water bowl for the fullest effect
  • Let staff, not just management, champion the initiative behind the bar
