Choosing Treats for a Multi-Dog Household

Treating one dog is straightforward. Treating three dogs of different sizes, ages and appetites fairly, without triggering a scramble at the treat tin, takes a bit more thought.

The size and portion challenge

A treat sized for a Labrador is not appropriate for a Chihuahua sharing the same household, and giving everyone the same treat regardless of size risks over-treating the smaller dog while under-rewarding the larger one. Single-ingredient treats that break apart easily, like Pawhawk Steak and Bark Ribs, make it far easier to scale the portion to each dog.

Managing the scramble

Dogs in multi-dog households often compete for treats, which can create tension at exactly the moment you are trying to reward good behaviour. Treating dogs individually in separate spaces, or asking for a sit before each treat is handed out, slows the process down enough to keep things calm.

  • Scale treat size to each dog rather than giving identical pieces
  • Treat calmer, lower-confidence dogs first to avoid them missing out
  • Use a consistent cue like "sit" before every treat to reduce scrambling

Stocking up for the whole household

Our Dog Treats Selection pack or a 3-month subscription both work well for households going through treats faster than a single dog would. Browse the full range to find what suits your dogs.
